How to Install Gutter Guard on Corrugated Roof: A Step by Step Guide

Gutter guard mesh fitted along the edge of a corrugated metal roof in Perth

Saturday arvo. The ladder’s up, the drill’s charged, and the roll of mesh you bought won’t sit flat against the ridges of the roof. You’re holding it with one hand, wondering what you’ve missed. It’s a common place to get stuck.

Gutter guard installation on a corrugated roof means fitting a cover over the gutter that follows the shape of the sheets, so leaves stay out and rainwater still gets in. To do it, clear the gutters, choose a guard that matches the sheet profile, seat its edge into the corrugations, screw it down to the roof and gutter lip, then seal any gaps. The steps are simple. The roof edge is where the risk sits.

We’re Perth Gutters Cleaning, so this guide covers how the job is done and where we’d rather you called us. Prefer to skip the ladder? See our gutter guard installation in Perth page.

What does gutter guard installation on a corrugated roof involve?

Quick definitions first. Gutter guard refers to a mesh, screen or cover that sits over a gutter to keep leaves and debris out. A corrugated roof means a roof made of wavy metal sheets, with ridges and valleys running down to the gutter. A scalloped edge is the shaped lip on some guards, made to sit in those waves. Aperture is defined as the size of the holes in the mesh.

Different guards suit different roofs. According to Bunnings (undated), you choose the profile by roof type: corrugated, tiled, or a guard that fits into the gutter. Buy the wrong one and no amount of screws will fix it.

What do you need before you start?

  • A guard profile made for corrugated roofs, plus a bit extra for corners and joins
  • A cordless drill and self tapping screws
  • Silicone for sealing the edges
  • Something to cut the guard to length
  • Gloves, a brush and a hose

Measure the gutter run before you buy, and follow the packaging. It beats a blog post every time, ours included.

How do you install gutter guard on a corrugated roof?

Every product has its own instructions, so treat these steps as the general order of work. One maker’s guide shows what it looks like in practice.

  1. Clear and check the gutters. Remove debris, flush the downpipes, and repair any gutter with holes.
  2. Dry fit the guard. Lay it along the gutter before you fix anything and check the profile lines up with the sheets.
  3. Seat the edge in the corrugations. According to Gumleaf’s installation instructions (undated), you fold the scalloped edge down about 30 degrees and seat it into the corrugations.
  4. Fix it to the roof. Gumleaf’s guide puts screws at every second corrugation rise, lined up with the existing roof screws.
  5. Fix it to the gutter lip. The same guide spaces screws roughly 300 mm apart.
  6. Join and turn corners. Two pieces join at their midpoint with a screw. At a corner, carry the guard over the hip, then trim and fasten it.
  7. Seal the gaps. A thin bead of silicone along the scalloped edge closes small gaps.
  8. Test it. Run a hose over the roof. The water should drop into the gutter, not over the front.

Yours may use clips or different spacing. Follow what’s in the box.

What goes wrong, and how do you fix it?

What goes wrong Why it happens What to do
Guard lifts in the wind Too few fixings, or not lined up with the roof screws Add fixings at the maker’s spacing
Gaps along the edge The edge isn’t seated in the corrugations Re seat it, then seal
Water runs over the front Guard sits wrong, or the gutter’s full below Recheck the angle and flush the gutter
Fine debris sits on top Aperture too large for your trees Choose a smaller aperture

On the last row, Blue Mountain Co Gutter Mesh (2022) advises a smaller aperture for smaller leaves.

Is it safe to do yourself?

Depends on the house. A low single storey is one thing. A steep double storey is another.

According to WorkSafe WA (2026), “falls from height can have devastating consequences, even from relatively low heights.” Its guidance suggests an elevating work platform or a drone instead of climbing, and crawl boards when you’re on a roof. It also warns that fragile roofing such as asbestos or fibreglass can fracture without warning.

Older corrugated roofs can be either. If you’re not certain what yours is made of, stay off it and don’t drill into it. Get it checked first.

What about bushfire areas?

If your block is bushfire prone, material matters. Bunnings advises metal guards there, and checking they’re fire rated and meet Australian Standards. The rule behind that is AS 3959. According to Blue Mountain Co Gutter Mesh (2022), it says installed guards shall be non combustible, and aluminium and steel both count. Not sure if you’re bushfire prone? Ask your council first.

What maintenance does it need after?

Less than an open gutter. Not none. Guards significantly reduce debris, but occasional maintenance may still be needed. A brush at the start of every summer, then a flush with the hose, keeps things flowing. Our post on how to clean gutters of your home walks through it, and if a downpipe does block, here’s what to do.

When should you call us instead?

If the roof’s steep, if you can’t tell what the sheets are made of, or if the gutters are in poor shape, call someone. We install gutter guard for residential and commercial properties from Osborne Park.

Our job starts with a roof inspection and measuring the gutters. Then we choose the material, custom fit the guard and finish with a quality inspection. We use aluminium for most homes and steel for commercial and high exposure sites. Most residential jobs take about a day, and we’re insured and follow Australian roof work safety practices.

We don’t publish prices because every roof is different. Get a quote and we’ll talk through the options. If your gutters need work first, our gutter repair service can sort that before the guard goes on. Our best gutter guard products guide compares the types.

The mistake that costs twice

Fitting guard over gutters that are already full or damaged. A cracked gutter stays cracked under a shiny new cover. Clear and repair first, then fit the guard.

My view: the guard is the easy part. The prep and the ladder safety decide whether the job’s worth doing yourself.

FAQ

Metal ones can. According to Blue Mountain Co Gutter Mesh (2022), AS 3959 says installed guards shall be non combustible, and aluminium and steel both qualify.

Will gutter guard stop me cleaning my gutters?
